Artist Spotlight, Lori Dorn, 10/16/15 - http://www.artdimensionsonline.com/blog/
- Q: How long have you been painting?
- A: I have been painting for 5 years – since 2010. Before that I was a professional photographer. As a photographer I found over time I was good at taking complimentary, beautiful photos and working well with people to get that outcome. I think my paintings still come from a similar place. I like to see and create beauty – for me there is enough darkness in the world.
- Q: Who are some of your greatest influences?
- A: Willem de Kooning, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Klee, Mark Rothko and Georgia O’Keefe.
- Q: What inspired you to get into the arts?
- A: I always enjoyed the creativity and the beauty and lifestyle of being a photographer, but as it became more technical and computer oriented it felt less like me. I longed for a more natural expression. I found it in painting. In my 30’s I was really drawn to and inspired by the beauty of people, so photographing them was exciting and satisfying. By the time I started painting that desire had shifted in me. I still wanted to create but didn’t want to rely on a subject.
- Q: Why do you like using acrylic paint rather than oil or watercolor?
- A: So far I have only worked with acrylics. I like that they dry fast. I use many different brands and types of acrylic – heavy body to very fluid. I feel since I am self taught working with one medium of acrylic on canvas I can really get comfortable and understand what I can do with that.
- Q: Do you have a message in your work?
- A: I don’t think my work has a message per se. I would like to think they bring beauty and a sense of peacefulness or joy.

ArtWork of the Day - Lori Dorn As we celebrate the final day of this marvelous exhibit "KISS" - we wanted to close with an image that is colorful, vibrant and joyous. "Zeal" by Lori Dorn is one of those paintings that makes you feel happy the minute you look at it. It has a large, generous presence and literally reaches across the Street and connects with you. More people have been lured into the gallery by this painting than I can count. While still relatively new to painting, (Dorn is a renown photographer), it seems that she has found her true calling. Her compositions are sound, well balanced and energetic, which she combines with a measured sense for texture and detail, and a color palette that confidently ranges from neutral to bold. Being a smart business woman as well, Dorn keeps her price-points extremely affordable, which has made her a darling of the design world almost overnight. Private collectors are clearly beginning to catch on, the first painting we had on display this month, "Vibrant", practically flew out the door. Heads up collectors an design-aficionados - you will want to get on board of this train before it leaves the station :)
